About us

The popularity of piping and drumming in mainland Europe originates from the influence of Scottish and Irish Regiments garrisoned in Germany over many years as friends and allies. This band is a product of that legacy and a poignant reminder of music and traditions left behind.

The Crossed Swords were formed in JHQ Rheindahlen by Piper Davie Moir of the Royal Engineers at the request of Major General Mungo Melvin CB OBE.

Our royal connection

In honour of their founder, the band proudly wears the MacDonnell of Keppoch tartan (otherwise known as Government Tartan No.26) which is associated with His Majesty’s Corps of Royal Engineers. The origins of the band’s name can be found in the shield of Field Marshall Montgomery’s 21st Army Group which has represented British Forces in Germany since 1944.
